What is an electronic Leak Detector?

An electronic leak detector is a unit that senses the different sound frequencies of water from a leak. A trained plumber deciphers these sounds to determine the exact leak source. It is a widely-used residential plumbing tool to locate leaks in toilets, drains, steam pipes, irrigation, and other plumbing systems. An electronic leak detector comes with a transducer, sensitive to sounds emanating from the pipes. The use of this equipment varies on the position and the type of in-line pipe.

How it works:

Sound is the basic principle most plumbers rely on while detecting concealed plumbing leaks through electronic leak detectors. All leaks, even the smallest ones, generate a sound when water runs between walls or floors. Different leaks produce varying frequencies depending on the pressure in the pipes. 

When the detector moves on a flat surface, it registers the sound using the transducer. When the machine senses a noise, it amplifies and transmits the sound waves at a higher frequency to the security system. Based on the detected sound and other information the leak detector provides, the plumber deciphers and finds the potential leak's location. It also helps them identify whether it is a cracked pipe or a leaky faucet.
